The story of Knut Hamsun’s life and work is like a fairytale. A tale of a talented, poor boy from the country who struggled and starved and fought his way ahead, and who, after many a trial, won a reputation as one of the world’s truly great writers. Knut moved with his family from Gudbrandsdalen to Hamsund in 1862 when he was just three years old. He first began to find his way around the world on the tracks of this little farm. His close relationship to the culture and nature of his home district is clearly reflected in his writing. In Hamsund you can visit the house he grew up in, which today is a museum containing objects that relate to the writer and his family. You can go on a guided tour, wander along the farm-tracks or buy a book in the museum shop and read in the house or the garden. Here you can get to know the environment and the landscape to which he often returned in his works and reminiscences. “My home was poor, but immensely precious” (Hamsun).
