The museum was opened in 1977. The collection consists of tools and equipment related to the various sections of the mine: power plant, electrical department, machine room, carpentry workshop, laundry, smelting works and hospital. The models of the mine give an insight into how the operation was managed underground. The museum also has large collections of photographs and minerals.
The ruins of the world’s first electrical copper smelter are close to the museum.

How do I get there?
The show mine is at Sandnes, about 40km from the centre of Fauske. The museum is 2km further along the valley. Follow the E6 to Finneid and then RV830 to Sulitjelma.

The settlement of Sulitjelma has a distinctive quality. There are many architect-designed buildings – Namsos and Lillestrøm houses, “Plysjbyen” and the mining community of Jakobsbakken, which ceased to exist in 1968 but where the settlement has been preserved.
Sulitjelma is situated in one of the most interesting botanical regions of Scandinavia. In the area there are nature trails to three disused mines. The signs along the way give an insight into the local nature, history and geology. A mountain road runs between Fossen dam and Sjønstå and it was here the ore was transported during the first years of mining at Sulitjelma. There are many hiking opportunities in the mountains in Sulitjelma. Paths lead over to Sweden and the neighbouring municipalities. The long-distance North Calotte Trail starts here. Accommodation in huts is available along several of the routes.
The Sulitjelma area has hundreds of large and small lakes and is an eldorado for game fisherrmen.
